The ReCover Initiative Drives Retrofit Solutions for Atlantic Canada
Earlier this fall, the ReCover Initiative hosted a series of industry stakeholder roundtables in each of the four Atlantic Provinces. The objective was to learn from each other about work in the sector and brainstorm ways to support each other’s objectives around deep retrofits, using a lens that includes equity and workforce capacity and readiness.
Join us to hear what we heard and to ask questions about ReCover’s plans to support the sector.
Webinar: The Net-Zero Regulatory Environment in Nova Scotia
The Building to Zero Exchange (BTZx) is hosting the 2nd phase of our Action Accelerator Series, The Net-Zero Regulatory Environment in Nova Scotia. This webinar session is a follow up to our invite-only roundtable event that was held in May and is intended to broaden the audience and gather more feedback on barriers and areas for action around advancing net-zero buildings in Nova Scotia.
The Nova Scotia Building sector is navigating challenges on the path to net-zero construction. Some identified barriers include the perceived cost of constructing high-efficiency buildings, workforce capacity issues, and regulatory roadblocks.
This webinar will aim to facilitate further discussion on prevalent themes seen at the roundtable event, and have participants discuss and provide input into the following topics:
Definition: What is Net Zero?
Design, Cost, and Budget Constraints
Code Adoption
Coordination and Collaboration
Policy Roadmap and Timeline
The BTZx seeks to address the misalignment between policies and incentives that encourage net zero construction and the reality of the real estate and development market. We hope you will join us to provide input and reflect on key takeaways and opportunities for collaborative action.
Action Accelerator Webinar Series: At the Intersection of the Housing & Climate Crises
Join us for the Action Accelerator Webinar Series.
This edition is designed for stakeholders from the green building and affordable housing sectors to have strategic conversations exploring ways to balance the priorities of housing affordability and accessibility with the need for net-zero renovations and new construction standards. The aim is to ensure that in the necessary urgency of solving one problem, we do not create others.

Falkland Street Passive House Retrofit
Habit Studio, a women-led architecture firm located in Halifax, is undertaking the first Passive House retrofit in Nova Scotia. The project involves the conversion of a two-storey 1850s home into office space for the Habit Studio team.
Retrofitting existing buildings is essential to achieving the provincial target of net-zero emissions by 2050 and Halifax’s decarbonization goals set out in the HalifACT climate action plan. The Falkland demonstration project will improve performance of the building enclosures through insulation, high performance windows and doors and airtightness and will upgrade the mechanical systems with high efficiency ventilation and heat pumps.
This talk will share on the motivations for the project and provide the technical details which are modeled to achieve an 88% reduction in GHGs and heating reduction of 92%.
